I agree with Frauholzer, that teachers will very likely write more for the right answer than the wrong one. They want the right one to be undeniably right whereas they're not so worried about the wrong one. So pick the longest answer. (I don't know about the C thing, but I suppose it's as good an answer as any.)

On a test written by testing companies (SAT, GMAT, TOEFL etc) they know better than to be so obvious.

If two of the answers are very similar, (for example one answer is "big" and the other is "large") there is very little chance that one will be right and the other wrong. Pick one of the other answers. On the other hand if two answers are opposite, there's a pretty good chance that one is right.

On the GMAT math section, questions starting with "which of the following" usually have E or D as the correct answer. Same may well be true of SAT.

As a teacher, you have an equal opportunity of getting a question correct by guessing. Therefore, if you have 4 choices, you have a 1/4 or 25% chance of getting a question correct. Teachers do NOT automatically defualt to choice 'c'. I suggest you study and then eliminate the wrong choices. That way, if you have to guess, you up your odds of getting it correct. Good luck. =)

On a teacher-created test, if you are random-flat out guessing, choose the longest answer or C (teachers tend to do that)
On a standardized or book-test, that is, one that your teacher didn't create, you just have to guess.
If your teacher knows that teachers default to C, pick anything but C!
