I don't know how much my father spent on my first car. It wasn't important to me. What was important was that I had a safe & reliable car. It wasn't sporty or hot looking (it was a corrolla) but it got me around for 10 years and I loved it. Figure out what you can afford. Then see what you can get for that money. Saturns are always inexpensive safe cars. If you daughter isn't spoiled, then she will be happy just to have a car!

Buy a used car something like a 1990 Ford 2 door escort or perhaps an older model van for around $1,850.00 this is about what you should spend on her also money saver tip for yourself make her buy and pay for her own insurance. believe me when she wrecks and at her age she ain't gonna be able to avoid that very easily you'll be glad you did, if you ever get around to looking at the premium's she'll be paying for wrecking a car. That is a number to scare you stiff!

don't spend more than $6,500.00 otherwise you spoiled the child and wasted the money after her first crash happens (her fault or not).

You would want to get a car that isn't just safe, but also reliable and economical. I suggest Honda Civic or any import car would be a good ideal. You might able to find something for about 5k to 10k.
