I would put some in a spary bottle, vinegar will not stain or bleach out your carpet, so you can use it full strength. I usually put 1 cup vinegar into the spray bottel and top it off with water, then spray away! It's also a great way to sanitize your kitchen counters and bathrooms!

Use white vinegar ONLY, mix it with baking soda, rub it into the area with a soft bristed brush, DO NOT SCRUB, you will ruin the fibers, place a white cotton towel over the area and weight it down, let it sit for an hour, then shop vac it out or use a shampooer, then clean the area with water, you may want to use a little laundry detergent to get rid of the vinegar smell. Make sure you get any and all residue out of the carpet as it will only attract more dirt to that area faster. The vinegar breaks down the proteins in the stains and the baking soda absorbs them away from the material.

Add some baking soda (not baking powder), it will help with the odor. You can sprinkle it directly on the spot and leave it for a day or so (the longer the better) and then vacuum it up.

I'll try the vinegar (white) and see how that works.
