It's basically all computers now, as a commercial thing, just because old-fashioned drawing board style takes so much more time. But as to learning the design concepts that go behind these things, the programs themselves don't help you much, but the users' groups and Yahoo! groups and suchlike, where you can get to know more experienced users, might help a lot. Very likely your local community college can give you some real help.
Also, once most of you know which program each other is using, students often cross-pollinate their ideas, and even share bits of gif files, and work together on some rather amazing things. Even very young people can get amazing results if they learn a good graphics program while they are young. They will clown around for awhile, but then real ideas start cropping up like "Oh, wow, you know what ELSE I could do?" and the game is afoot.
Do have a good time. That's got to be the start.

To be a graphic designer/multimedia designer you must have a portfolio. Also schooling helps a good bit if you find the right place....sometimes they have career placement and get you knowledge into the field on what you would like to do...connections with people always help as well....but i would say get schooling for it and you will really have help in areas that you need to have taken care of before hitting the art work force!

Neither. The only way to be a graphic designer by selling a product. Make a portfolio, get it to ad execs (or someone who buys stuff that you intend on making). Otherwise, you're either 1) a kid with a degree in graphic design, or 2) a schmuck who blew their cash on computer games.

Courses, for sure.
I can make some graphic programs jump through hoops but that does not make me a designer.
