I wanted to get a chemical to dump into the toilet because it drains rather slow when flushed. I went to Wal-mart and looked at products like Liquid Plumber and Drano and all of them say NOT to use them in the toilet.

1. Why?

2. What can I buy and dump in the toilet to clean the pipes and possibly help it flush better and faster?

We're in the city so it's not connected to a septic system but drains into the public sewer system.

Thanks for any help

is this waste line vented? The reason you cant pour drano into a toilet is because if your toilet is backed up it won't flush and if it won't flush how wil the drano get to the clog? so you can if you flush it down but then you will loose the power of the concentrate. you can try the shower drain instead they should be connected. I would get some rubber gloves a new wax toilet ring or waxless and a snake. remove the toilet and send the snake down the pipe or better yet call the plumber and find another place to save money because this is a nasty job.

I believe you not suppose to use them because of the way the toilet is mounted. Unlike your kitchen or bathroom sink, your toilet is sitting on a wax ring to make the seal on the pipe. The caustic cleaner has a good chance of eating thru the wax ring causing leakage.

To clean the drain you might want to try running a drain snake down it to auger out any of the crud. These items can be bought at any hardware store.

Personally, I would stay away from chemicals.

What I do to save money when I have a drain clog, is I go to Home Depot and rent a power snake from them. It does the trick and can be done for around $20.00.

I live in NYC and I had the same problem, some time ago. I found
that liquid plumber and/or drano was very effective. But visit a Home Depot and you may find a product that is more specifically suited to the job. Best of luck!

I use drano all the time in the toilet. If you use it in the sink, why not the toilet? It all goes down the same drain. Right? Here it does!

Also, drano and liquid plumber make products for the toilet

dumping chemicals in the cities system will create gases that may come back up into your home and other homes around you. the only real way to do this is to take the comode up from the floor and snake it out with a sewer auger. a guy friend can do this without calling a plumber. good luck
