Norton is AWFUL. Stay away from it. Recently, a client had Symantec Corporate edition (the Corporate version of Norton) and it failed to catch a piece of malware that infected 40 Windows 2000 computers on his network. I came in, charged him over $1600 and used a program that I had never heard of until this, Dr. Web Antivirus (included on the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows - http://www.ubcd4win.com) and it found the bug with 3 month old virus data files. 3 days and an expensive infection later, Norton caught it... Norton makes cr@ppy products and about the only thing they do well is advertise so people like ppp THINK they are good. And just wait until av_says_hi tries to upgrade or remove the norton products she has and goback makes it impossible to boot her system and difficult to recover her files - I've seen people complain about this SO often it's not funny.

What should you use? Well, given it's success, I'd probably say http://www.drweb.com/

For the MOST part, products SHOULD be comparable - most vendors SHARE the new viruses and malware they get daily with other vendors to improve overall security... but not all. And even then, some (like apparently Symantec) don't spend appropriate time examining the samples to create a cure. You might try http://www.drweb.com/ - the one that did the best job on my clients systems - McAfee (my usual favorite) wasn't tried; AntiVir and AVG, as I recall, didn't catch it. Sophos did... but Sophos is business only... so you can't really get it for yourself. McAfee is quick to come up with virus definitions (and has saved me when McAfee let other clients down), but McAfee is a bit of a resource hog.

Another good article on Antivirus and other products with regards to system performance is:

It depends on which program has more updated "virus definition" files. Any answer is a guess. I would guess the av-xp is right unless the McAfee software is up to date too. Depending on the severity of the infection, it might be best to leave it alone. Anti virus software has become worse than the virus themselves.

I asked a answer similar "When it comes to Internet Security, what softwares best suits your wants and needs?" two days ago and if you look at it, you can find out a bit more about your needs. In short, he mentioned about the following two I would also suggest to you. I've been using it for the past two days and I to think this program can help you. Here are the two:

1) www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program

2) www.ewido.net

Those two are actually copied and pasted from my answer page. The guy seems to be a Clinical Psychiatrist, from France or a Clinical Psychiatrist, named France, all in seriousness, if you look at my question and answer, you will know.

I use AVG, mainly because it is free and has never let me down. It also works as good if not better than Commercial Antivirus software liek Norton and McAfee.

Everything on it is free unless you need telephone support. Antivirus is updated on every time you come online. Full featured with an extremely active forum community.

I've tried all the free and paid suites out there, this one still blows them away by a mile.

Depends on your needs. If you only tend to use your comp for research & other "less dangerous" purposes, you could use Macafee (sp?) or Norton- our University gives out Mac for free, so if you have a chance, that's not a bad idea. But if you tend to visit and download from sites that are less... reputable... you'll need something more agressive- but that also means more expensive.
