When someone buys a star (in space) as a gift to someone, where or whom gets the money? And how do you know if you completely own it, if it wasn't anyones to sell in the first place?? Plus how would you know if someone hasn't bought the same ball of gas?

You are not buying the star you are buying the right to name the star. The name does go into an offical registry and since there are an almost unlimited number of stars no one even needs to sell the right to name it twice.
Where the money goes depends where you buy from. Some give their profits to charity, some don't.

Well, to get technical, they're not "for sale" by anyone. You can't really buy them, because it's not like you get a name tag put on them and say this one is Melissa's and no one can buy it now. That would be impossible to keep track of everyones star qand which one has been purchased or not. AND, how would you know which one is yours from looking frm the ground??? You would need a telescope and some directions. That's what I think. Hope it helps.

The money goes to the International Star Registry. They are just a business like any other trying to make an easy buck.

Keep in mind this is just a novelty gift, and the names purchased are not recognized by any scientific or astronomical groups or communities.

In my opinion - waste of money. Like you said, its not theirs to give away in the first place.

You might as well just open Photoshop and design your own certificate saying you're the owner of Antares. It will be just as valid, and some shyster steller real estate outfit won't have your money.

you probably guessed that by buying a star you buy a lot of gas, not necessarily in space.
