the icons by your clock are there to show you what programs are running. In order to close those you have to close the program or "disable" the icon from showing - this you can do in the option section of that perticular program.

All the icons near the Right Hand side of your taskbar are shortcut quick launch icons on Start up . The methods others are suggesting are temporary methods of disabling where it will work only as long as your computer is on. On restarting your computer they will come up again.
If you want to permanently want to delete the icons use the following steps :
1> Click on START on extreme LHS of your task bar
2>Click on RUN
3> Type " msconfig" in that space
4> Click OK
It will open up a new box called "System Configuration Utility" with 6 Tabs called General, System.INI, WIN.INI,BOOT.INI, Services and START UP
5> Click on the TAB > START UP
6> Uncheck all the items which you do not want to have them loaded
NOTE: Please do not uncheck any item which you are not sure of what it is about. You might just mess up your system configuration.
7> Once you have unchecked the unwanted program application , Click OK.
8> If you DISABLE all, all you START UP Items will be disabled.( Not recommened if you are not a computer wizard as it might cause lil damage)
9 > after Successfully Clicking OK , it will Instruct you to RESTART computer for the changes to apply. You can RESTART or EXIT w/o RESTART from it also.

I'm not sure if there's a way to actually -remove- them but you can hide them.
Right click the toolbar (it doesn't matter where), a window should pop up for taskbar and start menu properties and where it says 'notification area' click a button that says customize and you can change which icons you want to show and which you want to hide.

right click and delete, always make sure that you aren't exiting out of programs that are supposed to be run in the background processes, like anti-virus (anti-spyware applications), or other hardware connectivity ports (i.e. printer icons, fax icons, etc.)
hope this helps you
