My daughter has a severe immune deficiency syndrome. She has applied for SSI, went through the beginning paperwork, etc. She waited for months, then got an appointment and went through the required physical examination about 4 months ago, and since that time there has not been any notification of their decision or what comes next. Is there a standard time limit before they are required to give her an answer? I could not find anything on the SSI government website.

Not been to court yet. We are not that far in the process. I understand that comes as an appeal AFTER you've been denied. That's what we're waiting to hear right now, deny or approval.

DO NOT TRUST SSA. Contact your State Representative. That sometimes helps in expediting the process. Especially in an election cycle. SSA is filled with semi-competent bureaucrats and there is little worthwile organization. You will rapidly become just another statistic if you dont stay on top. This is not to say you should be less than polite to your SSA contact, because like most bureaucrats if you make them mad your papers get buried even deeper in the pile.

I would be great if there was actually a time line. the federal disability program does not have deadlines for applications or appeals. The average inital case takes about 3-4 months for decision. You should just call back to the local SSA office and ask if a decision has been made on a case.

The reality is many cases are in fact denied the first time around. If she is denied, then of course appeal, make sure you find a disability rights advocate or Lawyer to assist if you need to run through appeals. The bad news is getting a hearing date could take 6 months or more!

SSA typically makes a decision on the claim within 3-5 months, and will provide notification if further information is needed. If the claim is rejected, then there is an opportunity to appeal the decision. If your daughter does not receive notice of a decision or a request for more information, she should contact her local Disability Advocacy organization.

Normally states will deny all SSI and Disability requests a minimum of 2 times no matter what the circumstances. Plan on working hard for the states money and plan on reapplying time after time until they are convinced that it is legitimate and the person deserves the monies. This can be a lenghty process that will add up to months.... good luck.

It just depends on how behind they are. They take forever on everything. Whether its getting approved or denied. Then if youre approved, they take just as long getting you a check cut. Theyre in no hurry.
