Don't do anything religious like telling people they are going to Hell.

Get the history on the building itself, if it might be haunted, and then run wild with it.

I think you should base your haunted house on an actual historical or fictional building that everyone on knows quite well, like the White House in Washington, D.C. or even the house where the Munsters used to live in. Then add your own little touches to the inside to make like the person is entering on a night with the people that lives in that house, so people will feel like they are coming to visit an old family friend and then do all the halloween stuff then. Kind like the Psycho house at universal pictures studio lot , or for an example to follow look at that the Haunted House ride at Disneyland amusement park as a pattern for your haunted house this year.

Do a "bucket of brains "..a "must" for a haunted house .

You will need :
- fresh slimy pumpkin seeds & goop from a freshly carved pumpkin
- a large bowl or jar with a lid or any cover
- a sign that reads " MONSTER BRAINS "- 25 CENTS TO TOUCH- if you dare- BUT NO PEEKING
PUT A CUP OF THE GOOEY PUMPKIN SEEDS & GOOP INTO THE BOWL
Participants must close their eyes when they reach into the bowl ; but are not allowed to remove the brains .
Note : It's a good idea to set up several bowls , buckets or containers of "brains" ; and have a spare jar on hand to refill .

Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere! No matter how many people in scary costumes jump out at me with chainsaws, I'm still going to scream in terror when it happens in a suitably spooky place and laugh hysterically when it happens in the Corn Crib of Terror. (Which I am not making up.)

Fortunately, atmosphere is cheap. Shredded, gauzy black and grey farbic on the walls is nice when you don't have stone or corroding brick--and a fog machine can only add to the effect. Skip the sound effects CD's and instead go for some truly creepy music...old children's records, broken music boxes.... Put the scariest objects in rooms without costumed people. If you're walking through a room with scattered bones and bloodstained walls, the anticipation of something jumping out is just going to build and build, and a moment's relief before walking into the next room full of screamers hits them when they least expect it! Finally, skip "movie monsters" (Freddy, Jason, etc.) and opt for walking dead instead. Far fewer preconceived notions.

Feel free to email me for more tips--I've worked haunted houses for years. And don't forget--fake blood is as cheap as corn syrup and food coloring! (Makes it tasty, too!)

There is so many cool and easy things you could do especially within 2 stories.....Use some props hanging from the ceilings , effects lighting , and eirry music ...have spooks on all floors and in each room.....create a tour so you can control the chaos!! Use a combination of pipes banging on the floors and thumping from various walls as they walk past....if you can use cutouts then grate some sections off and have spooks behind and inside them...use glow in the dark effects to enhance the experience along with a hallway of hands sticking out...both fake and real ones from cutouts on other side...basically you fake a wall for the hallway so they have to pass but you use corners within the maze to get out......spooks everywhere to scare the wits out of people.....have rooms with horror themes from movies like the saw, frankenstein lab, werewolf, torture chambers,etc.....you can create this from pvc boards painted and cut to make rooms and backdrops...of course use dry ice and fog machines to better enhance the scare tatics.....have a blast!!!

never can count on the real ghosts. Make sure you have the standard bats and goblins, but make sure if you have furniture to put skeletons up, make them look like they are watching TV or working at the counter or something

Have some people dress up really scary and have lots of cool lights like strobe lights and like black and orange lights. Get stuff like that.
