I think they are but my dad says they're not. Theyve been around since 1980 though

Nah, not classic punk.

I divide punk into two real groups- Classic, which is 70s punk and 80s Hardcore Punk (also good, but with a different sound and often more political messages, not that 70s punk didn't have its share of political songs).

Bad Religion falls into the second category. But they're still kickass.

I think they're right on the edge. You can either consider them being on the very end of the whole late 70's/80's punk scene. Or at the very beginning of what it is now. It really can go either way, because they're still putting out new stuff and are still an active band. I made my friend a punk rock 101 cd that was full of bands she should know. i put them on there and she was like "hey dude, aren't they like old?". so this is a tough one to answer. I would say they're classic punk to our generation.

They are the style of natural punk, but they weren't one of the first bands. They were influenced by the classic punk bands like The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, all those bands. They have/had the same style as the original bands, and they are definitely more punk than labeled punk bands today. SO in some ways, yes, they are classic punk.
