The country has not exactly gone down the pan at all, but there has been a massive shift in work patterns, education and social interaction; all of which are far too complex to go into.
Broadly speaking, British society is in a melting-pot, as a former industrial power with a huge technological base, now turns towards being a service industry and warehouse economy.
Hence the polarisation of society, in which the poor and realtively uneducated find themselves in low-skill, menial jobs, and those at the opposite end of the spectrum, are expected to be very educated indeed, with multiple skills.
I believe it is still the case, that one quarter of the world's money passes through the City of London everyday.
It is also the case that we still have brilliant engineers and designers; often working abroad for foreign companies.
Britain is very strong in civil engineering and design; undertaking a number of massive projects throughout the world.
If society now seems to be on edge and in decline, then it may well have something to do with the fact that people now live in a complex society and in the personal capsule of family, internet and TV.
Basically, there may be decline in certain areas, but overall, the economy is alive and kicking; with England still being a wealthy country and a force to be reckoned with internationally.
It just doesn't feel like that!

This country is an amature america and an unsophisticated europe. It is nown the pan as you put it, because people are not clever enough to keep their own culture. I like the immigrants because they do. I do not like religion, but culture is diffent. I see people now looking like folks did in the u.s. forty years ago. Everyone looks the same here, not much individuality, and all the high streets are just clothes, hair, shoes, and pubs. oh, and bloody mobile phones. There is no diversification. Nothing to look at. It is a boring country, down the pan. and, I am leaving to go somwhere else in four weeks so good luck G.B. it could have had it all, but the average working class hero..is too dumb, racist, and proud to embrace the wonderful selection in this country, and thier ignorance has ruined it. Oh, I see you want to control the world again do you......go join the S White House Lot, they are into that too. you will get on there.

Financially the country was bankrupt after two world wars, whereas Germany and Japan restarted with a clean sheet Britain continued to repay the war loans to America until it was impossible to service the debt any more and eventually even the interest charges had to be written off as the country was on its knees.
Since then the government has been soaking the workers with high taxes as all the assets have gone. Even now Blair seeks his part in history by going to war with America instead of building a decent country to live in

It's not so much a matter of us going down as other countries coming up since WWII. Our relative power is less.
1)This is because other countries have liberated themselves from colonialism, since WWII.
2) Because of WWII, the U.S. was the most powerful country, because we won the worst war in history and came out of it without any damage to our own homeland. This gave us an edge over Europe, as they had to repair the damage.
But now other countries are industrializing and going into the information age, which doesn't require so much infrastructure as the old industrial age (steel mills, etc.)
I take it you're talking about the USA, not an other country.

I don't want us to 'own' anywhere else but England.
It really is pretty good here but we get complacent and fail to see how kind and generous the majority of the people are, how tolerant and how innovative we can be.
Our trouble lies with politicians. It's about time they realised that they are the servants of the people, not glorified Posh and Becks.
I would like to see the number of MPs slashed, their wages slashed and lots of things (ie EU, police force mergers, Iraq etc ) decided by polls. Let the people decide - more common sense, less money and more interest in how the country is managed.

But when we owned just about everything, we did it by colonising other lands & so we have left our mark all over the planet; not always a good thing.
Also, when did we own just about everything ? What do you mean 'We' ? A few people got rich but most of ancestors got just as sh*tty a time as the poor slobs we colonised.

i have a theory, in America doctors and other professionals get paid handsomely for their work, so all our best emigrate and we loose out. new ideas are ignored and get taken up by Japanese companies , we don't encourage imagination as much as we should, our open door policy means that people can come and learn skills and use them back in their own countries. i am not against people coming here but our resources should be looked after more

It seems to me we have all Lawyers and Accountants in charge.
All they know about is how to take money from people but telling stories very near to lieing.
They also set their fees as the strongest trade unions in the country.
To succeed we need men who have had to earn a living by MAKING things - not words -people want to buy.

When you have foreign trade policy that not only does not encourage the develop of new and better steel nuts but encourages dis-establishment of small industry, than it's not surprising when all the wheels fall off.
