What exactly you want to know is not clear . The various cultures and customs would apply to all the mutitudes of cultures of a number of religons there .Howevr there is a common thread among he different groups under each major religon.i shall breifly speak about some the unusual about some religions first . the chritians and Muslims do not have caste distinctions . But in Inida particularly , the christians most of them marry among the families of their particular castes only . Rarely do they cross over to the othere castes just as other castes also do occasionally , sayijng caste is no bar .so are the mulsims in the south . infact some who coverted from csate hindugroups , they even now use the caste names after their names ,like Mohideen Pillai , kadhr Pillai etc.
let us leave them at it .
as regards the hindus , there are umpteen number of castes and they are the the creations of the British rule of Inida . The varunashrama in the vedhas which divides people of four major groups 1. The priests and teachers 2. the kings , ministers warriros , Administrators and government servants , 3. the traders , agriculturists , producers etc. and 4. labourers .of all sorts . These four were together forming the society. the four groupos were required to perform thier respective duties as a sacred offering - a sacrifice to the god . this was the essence and teachings of the vedhas .the castes wer not the creatioins of the vedhic scriptures as , yo will not be able to cite one instanc eof a caste name being appended to the anme of any person in any scripture or writting . But the habit of suffixing the name of one's business of function was that of the British people , like Thomas cook, Oliver goldsmith , George Blacksmith, Henry wood cutter , Tom weaver , . James Butler , cooper , Faggoter , sheppard etc , were very common with them even from the very ancient times till today. The habit of calling names with the caste name and the division of people on the basis of the caste wer introduced by the British in order to make it esy for them ot rule over the ountry by dividing the people in ot various groups . In fact during the British period peole had the habit of signing their names with their degrees . like Raman .B.,A , subban .MA and the like . these sort of funny habits were introduced during the British Raj and they were never existent before the British rule and after the British Rule in inida . But the same Britishers decry the prevalence of the caste systems . In fact the Britishers who were stnding before the Inidan kings with folded hands befor they could get a footing on the Inidan soil , treated the Inidans as inferior beings . they treated them as untouchables and taught untouchability also in Inida . he inidan Officers even in the Secretariate wer not allowed to go to the floor wher the white officers were having their rooms .such was the discrimination and untoucvhabiliy practiced by the British in India . Barring this nefarious lessons introduced by the dirty Britishers who have never had a bath in their life , the other cultural practices of the people of the Inidan sub continent is something exemplary. In no prt of the world you can see the flexibility and accomodation that the people of various ethinic and religous groups have among themselves in this sub -continent .
In the entire world , this is the only country that proved that non-violence and peaceful resistence to authority has the power to defeat even the mightiest power that ruled the entire world . No ohter country has proved it or understood it even today .But Inida has proved it in parctice .It was possible , because , the spirit is in the soul of every individual in this sub-continent , irrespective of his religious belief . The people here have the highest degree of tolerance among the people of the entire world because their roots are embeded in a philosophy that relies on the strength of peace , love .and non-violence and hates violence .
It is like gas /warter that takes the shape of the container and can not be struck/ beaten into any paricular shape by any one. Thjat is essential for life ; but can also prove dangerous if miss handled .

Today is Maha Ashtami, ie., the eight day of the ten day of the Dushera celebrations. Now Dushera or Dasahara means Dus or ten (Lord Ravana) Hara means to defeat (Rama defeated Ravana). During the last four days of Dushera, people of West Bengal celebrate Durga Puja, the worship of Goddes Durga who slayed the buffalo demon Mahishasur. On this day the Goddess is worshipped with a special offering of 250 lotuses.
In the Ramayana Rama prayed Goddess Durga on this day before going to fight Ravana and is said to have offered 250 lotuses as offering. He defeated Ravana on the Dashami (tenth day). What country are you from?
