They have mid-dark brown slimy tops and the slugs seem to love them.
Are they bad for my garden and if so how do I get rid of (lots of) them (from everywhere)?

Phil,
I don't want to sound condescending, but anyone who would eat a mushroom/toadstool on the word of some anonymous person over the web is a moron. I took a class at OSU on edible fungi and I have a very good idea what you have but I'm not going to tell you. If your description is not accurate enough and I am wrong it could have very bad consequences for you.

The best way to get rid of them is to take a hoe or the back of your rake and just knock them over. The above ground part is the reproductive part, kind of like a flower to higher plants. Knocking them over is like picking a flower--it doesn't hurt the fungi. The fungi is underground decomposing something. When the decomposition is finished, the fungi will have no more food and they will die out.

Be very careful about mushrooms. Go to the bookstore and get a good mushroom identifying guide with pictures for each type of mushroom.
Mushrooms can kill you if you're not absolutely certain they're edible, and toxic varieties can mimic non-toxic mushrooms. Best idea is to have an experienced "mushroomer" help you identify them on site before you pick them.

Good that the slugs like them... at least they're not eating other plants! And the mushrooms aren't bad for your garden. They're just growing on decaying wood or compost like they would in the forest.

For the love of God get a book on them before you decide if they are edible, and be sure you have identified them accurately, as some species are very similar to each other.

No mushroom is likely to be bad for the garden; I think they add a certain something!

Most are - but don't risk it, take one to someone who can identify it. With luck it will be what the French call a 'cep', as this belongs to this group.
