I think that most of the people who watch Countdown are little old people in retirement homes, so Terry Wogan would be a good bet, he's certainly old enough and is a favourite with the older generation.

Noel Edmunds would be a good replacement, I don't see how he cant do 2 shows! It would be funny if he can bring back the gunge tank lol!

How about Stephen Fry? although maybe he is busy enough. You won't find a TV presenter with any more intelligence that is for sure.

I don't think anyone should replace him - it's bin the Carol Voderman show since Des took over, so maybe she should do it on her own
