9/11 Was the primary reason as the NFL ran into problems with scheduling conflicts at the SuperDome in New Orleans. Because of the attack the NFL did not play the following weekend. The League decided that in case there is ever a reason to postpone games again they need to have the extra week to play those games.

It's because they extended the season by 1 week. Each team, at staggered times during the season, gets a week off (called a bye week). This way we actually get an extra week of football yay. There has always been a two week delay between the AFC and NFC championship games and the superbowl. I'm sure the decision to do so was not for the fans, but so they can have an extra week to show commercials and thus make more money. it had nothing to with 9/11.

Whoever brought 9/11 into this conversation is a MORON.
It's because of the bye week between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl. That's it.

A few years ago, they moved the start of the season back from Labor Day weekend (possibly to not conflict with college football's opening weekend). As such, and with the bye weeks, it moved the Super Bowl back a week since they wanted to keep the off-week in between the championship games and the Super Bowl.

What Ryan said, plus to build up the excitement and thus increase the size of the audience (---> commercial considerations), and to juggle around times to avoid broadcast conflicts with a presidential inauguration if it's a post-election year, and with whatever's going on in the NBA at that time.

The answer to all your questions my friend is MONEY! An extra week means more advertising revenue, both for the league and the network.

The bye weeks stretch the season out another week. Just another ploy to get more revenue.
