A farmer owns a square water tank, there is a mango tree at each corner(so four trees). He wants to make the tank bigger, the shape should be a square, the trees should in no way be in the water (like an island). What does he do?

Sarah Colleen explain in easier to understand terms. If you made it long, how would it still remain a square. Imagine it in your mind.

Cutting down mango trees, shocking.

Sarah Colleen is right, I know the answer of course, I thought of what she'd said. It's the answer alright. You imagine a square tank with four trees at its corners, now imagine a diamond shaped tank. I did not say that the trees had to be at the corners. So now the trees just end up at the side.
Lee C to got it.

add four right angle triangles so that the hypotenuses are where the outer edges of the original tank were.
Okay... to elaborate...
Words aren't always the best for describing a geometrical problem. I'll make a picture and post a link. Hang on. :)
All right. I'm done. Go here: http://saraide.livejournal.com/160387.html for my explanation. The pictures are not precise, but I think you'll get the idea.

it would be a lot of work to build a higher tank and pump water into it some of you....
i think sara colleen was on the right track. i will try to simplify the answer...
if there is a tree in each corner presently, the farmer should move the tank (rotate it) 33 degrees i believe. now the corners should be in between all of the trees.
from there, he can build the tank as large as the space remaining between the trees and tank allow. all the way until the sides of the tank almost touch the trees. he now has a much larger tank.
another way: just build on each side a triangle from the current corners out between the trees. then take out the original square sides so that he has a bigger tank. It would actually be a lot easier this way.
illistration? make it yourself! it's easy enough...draw a square..with dots outside each corner (trees)...now make a triangle out of each side pointing outward (this consists of drawing 2 lines that intersect at a point outside the trees) on each side. = bigger square
still not enough? okay fine. draw a square. put a tree (dot) outside the middle of each line. now draw another square INSIDE the first. (like a diamond, but with equal angles at all 4 corners) from the middle of the lines of the first square. ta-da!!! you got the idea!!!

replant the mango trees in a square shape and expand the tank or like others said just make it higher. If this is just a plastic or a cement tank buy another one!
or alternatively build four tanks on the outside of the existing square tank in T-SHAPE so that the tanks in the end remain square!

Rotate tank so with respect to the unmoved, uncutdown trees, it is "diamond-shaped" (but still actually geometrically square). The farmer can now lengthen each side until his beloved mango trees touch the tank in the middle of each side.

Build the tank up higher!
It's still a square and will contain more water (therefore the tank is bigger) but the trees won't have to be moved.
