Guinea pigs will shed a little, but if your guinea pig is missing large patches of hair then this is not normal. You can try to treat your pig for mites. Mites are tiny microscopic little bugs that live underneath the skin of guinea pigs. They can cause itching and irritation. Pigs that suffer from mites will bite, scratch, and pull out their hair to try to get some relief.
Good news is that it is a very common and easy condition to treat. Even if your pig does not have mites, the treatment will not hurt. Many people treat for mites on a regular basis, regarless if their pig is showing symptoms or not. See the links below for more information.
Please do not go to a petstore to get advice. Most of the time, petstore employees are not properly trained. Many times, they will try to sell you useless things in the store just to make money. A better option would be to consult a vet.

This could be a sign of many ailments, from mite all the way to scurvy (vit c deficiency). ONLY your vet can positively identify your pig's problem. Guinea pigs are naturally a prey animal, and so will try their very best to hide any sign of illness or weakness from you! If you have been keeping a weekly record of their weights, and a wieght loss hasrecently been recorded, then SEEK HELP IMMEDIATLY! This is serious, and diagnosing over the internet can be dangerous as many people with little or no expirence will try to help, and give bad advice(no offense intended). PLEASE take your guinea pig to the vet's office as soon as possible!

G-pigs (my daughter calls ours "moiters" b/c it sounds like they are "saying" that when they whistle at us) shed a little normally, but if your is losing much hair at all it is one of two problems:
Vitamin "C" deficiency, or ringworm. For the vitamin problem, you need to first be sure your are buying guinea pig food, not rabbit pellets. The rabbit pellets don't contain enough vitamin C, plus it has antibiotics in it that is actually bad for g-pigs. Also, be sure your g-pig food is fresh (don't buy a jumbo bag at once). Its shelf-life is only about 6 weeks at most before the vitamin C in it starts to go bad. Finally, be sure to give your g-pig fresh fruits and veggies (applies, carrots, etc.) for extra "C." One of ours had this problem once and the vet told me to put a little bit of Kool-Aid mix into her water for even more vitamins until the hair stopping falling out. The second problem to consider is ringworm. First, if you or your kids are handling the g-pig much, be sure to wash your hands so you don't get the fungus ring-worm (actually a fungus, not a "worm"). Secondly, you can buy some Lotriman cream that says it is for Athlete's Foot at the drugstore and put it on any bald areas of the g-pig. Do this for about a week, a couple of times a day, and that can help rid the piggy of the fungus. Good luck! They are great pets and worth the effort to keep healthy.

this is a normal thing unless you see spots where a lot of hair is missing then you need to be concerned otherwise there is nothing wrong with your guinea pig. they lose there hair all the time like a human does too.

They always start losing hair right before they give birth. If she hasn't had the opportunity to be with a male, then she probably needs a vitamin supplement. Go to the PetSmart store and talk to them.
