No, you have to sign a contract with the real estate agent in order to get your home listed in the MLS (multiple listing service.) The standard length of the contract is six months. If your home hasn't sold by then, you're free to list with a different agent.

Well you can only use one listing agent at a time but the minimum amount of time to list is generally 3 months not 6.. Depending where you live the commissions will be different. Always remember, the amount paid in commissions is NOT Negotiable..
