I am not sure what motor oil to use for my car. I have a '96 BMW 318ti with about 115k miles on it. I really dont know the difference between 5W/30 or 10W/40 or however else it comes. Fill me in.

The 10w/40 Haviland Extended Life oil for vehicles with over 75,000 miles on them.
For summer and 5w/30 for winter.

The vehicle's recommended oil will be on the fill cap, or in the owners manual..... The difference is the viscosity ( which is how thick the oil is), the numbers also tell what temperature the oil needs to get to before thinning.....Every vehicle is different, usually you use one type for the summer and one for the winter, however, if you use 5W-30 this works for both, as long as you are not towing, racing, etc.

If you can find it look it up in your owners manuel. If you don't hav eit a call to a BMW dealer should be all need to do. I am certain BMW has a specific grade of oil for your car and the dealer will know or have the answer on hand.

5W/30 is for colder conditions, 10W40 is for warmer. Use the chart found where you get your oil as a guide.
