If you have a very large hard drive, say more than 200 gig, once a month should be ok, more than that will simply take up a lot of time. Your pc will run faster because degraging puts all the different files for programs in easily accessed places.

EG - You install a program or game, and in order for that game to run effectively, the pc needs to access files to run it. Whenever you install something, it puts those files in the most readily available places, instead of together, which means, you could have files for a program all over the place. Defraging puts them all together so the pc doesnt have to search all over the hard drive for them.

Sure, it's wise to defrag your computer when
you add large files or install big programs
or if you see that the speed of your machine is gradually decreasing.
You must also defrag if your hard disk free space is only 15%

To defrag your computer is essentially like cleaning your house. Yes it is a good idea to clean your house. How often is a matter of use. Imagine that every time you get on your computer you it gets a little messy. So it is basically when you think the "house" [computer] needs "cleaned" [defrag]

Actually, you do not want to run a defrag often. This is why defrag has an analyze button. It will tell you if you need to or not...
