I cannot believe I'm saying this, but he would have been better than W. Buchanan opposed the Iraq War for the right reasons. As much as I disagree with his politics, he actually is a constitutionalist - he has ideals aligned with principals of law that he then applies to policy. (This is all the more weird for me because on immigration, I agree with Bush and disagree with Buchanan.)

Come to think of it, the way McCain is behaving lately (he's a two-face - see Robert Kuttner today in your op-ed pages), Buchanan would make the better president than McCain.

BTW, the questioner is right - I'm a liberal and I can see the difference between Buchanan and "most Republicans nowadays" pretty clearly.

I just don't think that would give us a very good chance of winning. I seriously doubt that he would be the Republican nominee.
