Honestly, ignore the paper, unless you want to be that traditional.
Get them whatever you know they love. Or maybe an orchid plant? That's something that's challenging to grow and will last and regrow with their love. A bottle of favorite wine? A gift certificate to their favorite restaurant? (And if you do that, call the restaurant ahead when you get the GC, and inform them it's an anniversary, they'll probably get special treatment!)

You could get them a reserved room at a nice hotel in his area and offer to take his kids if he has any for the night so he and his wife can have a wonderful quiet and romantic evening together! In his room leave a basket with scented bubble bath-scented lotion- and a candle and wine with 2 glasses! This will totally be the best for them both to relive their last year together and they will have YOU to thank!

First year anniversary, the traditional gift is paper.
How about making up a small scrapbook of photos of the two of them, along with a note from you in it about how much they mean to you and your wishes to them for the future?

Traditionally paper is given so...a gift certificate for a couples massage or couples cooking class.

i think the tradition says paper. but a nice bottle of wine if they drink it of maybe a certificate out would be nice.
