Well, to be honest with you, I have had a very hard time with growing up, and I will tell you why. I grew up in Northern Michigan for the first ten years of my life, and so it was a culture shock when my father moved us to Tennessee for a few years. When I got there the people would mess with me try to make me talk so they could laugh at my pronunciation. We lived there for three years then he moved me to Ohio, where people picked on me for my SOUTHERN accent. I lived there for 14 years and then moved to Missouri, to a place where it is kind of a melting pot for different dialects as so many people have relocated. But yet, sometimes people will mess with me here because it really depends on who I am around... if the person has a very strong accent, then I tend to pick up the drawl. If someone is very northern, I tend to pick up their northern dialect. This is not an intentional thing that I do!

You see, I think you have picked up the accent you have from others who have NOT lived there for their whole life, the ones you have spent lots of time with. Ever notice how actors and actresses can pull off the perfect accent for their role. This is because they study the accent they are trying to portray. You, on the other hand have unknowingly studied different dialects.

And by the way, congratulations for being different from everyone there. It not only sets you apart from the crowd, but it also makes you unique in your own little way. Can you imagine how terrible this world would be if we were all the same in every way?

Hugs to you and keep being you. Don't worry about the other's stupidities, as you HAVE to just be who you are!

Yes.

I was born in London and raised there for part of my life, but have also spent considerable periods living in Scotland with the other side of my clan. In addition, my mum speaks perfect, crystal clear English with a flawless accent while my dad was unmistakably Scottish. So just as I have their hybrid genes I suppose I have a hybrid accent. The Scots side say I have an English accent. The English side say I have a Scots accent. The Norfolk people, among whom I now live, have no idea what accent I have. Bless 'em :o)

Mind, it makes no great difference. Most people understand what I say anyway.

I was told by a canadian coupla I had a canadian acccent. I've been told by th eyankees I have a southern accent, and I;ve been told by the people in south george that I have a hill billy accent or by some an East Texas accent.
So for a South Georgia raised guy I don't know what my accent is. it sounds like something you get from a rusty bucket in heat:):)

I get that all the time. I'm from the south but I dont' see myself as having a accent as some of us do down here ya know. But I guess at times my country accent does come out when I least expect. I've heard alot I have a southern accent. But of course we who have the accent don't see it that way. They have the accent hehehe...

I get this a lot - it is weird. I grew up in So NJ (outside Phila). Everyone there always asked were I was from. Now I live in Ohio and they think people in NJ talk like me! My dad's from NJ, my mom is from Boston and I do have a lisp. Guess I have melded all that together and created my own sound!
