sure you are right... the romans, vikings, saxons and many more came here and ruled for many years. remember england had lost most of its men against them in wars anyway; hence there wasnt a lot of men left on the island anyway... the rest is up to your imagination...

so there is no such a think as an english person...

I am English and I am also British and from the United Kingdom.

There are a lot of confusing answers here some of which contain wrong information. I fear I am about to confuse things even more for you.

Great Britain is used as a geopolitical term describing the combination of England, Scotland, and Wales, which together comprise the entire island and some outlying islands.

The United Kingdom is a political union made up of four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom also has several overseas territories, including Gibraltar, Saint Helena and the Falkland Islands.

The English are an ethnic group or nation associated with England and the English language.

The adjective British has come to refer to things associated with the United Kingdom generally such as citizenship, and not just the island of Great Britain.

You can become British without being born here or any of your family ever being born here. You can't become English you either are through blood line or you aren't.

You are correct in the sense that through invasion most of us have our ancestry rooted in Germany, France or some other European country. There is no pure English if you go back far enough. But then that is true of pretty much any nation.

Ultimately I don't really think any of it matters. Through the ages we are all so mixed in one way or another I honestly wish we could just remember that we are all human above everything else.

If you would like to investigate this more you should look the various terms up on wikipedia.

I hope I have gone some way to answer your question.

I take it you aren't from an English speaking country? In which case your question is a good attempt. A bit more practice though.

Good luck and take care.

Michael, your spelling is dreadful!

If you are born in England, you are English. England is one country within the British Isles, just as Scotland, Ireland and Wales are. If you were born anywhere in the British Isles, you are British, and you are classified, for passport purposes, as a citizen of the UK.
The Romans did not invade England. At the time of the Roman invasion, there was no such place as England. Not sure what your comment on the Vikings is meant to convey, as they briefly attempted to colonize but mostly came to rape, loot and pillage.
So you are NOT 'wright' (the word is 'right') to say there is no such thing as AN English person. (you use 'an' before a word beginning with a vowel.)

Yes, there is such a thing as an English person. I should know - I am one!

I live in England. I was born in England. Both my parents were born in England. All of their parents were born in England etc. etc. as far back as I know. The Romans and the Vikings were a very very very long time ago, and even then there were already Anglo Saxons living here.

English people are also British, in the same way that Welsh people are British and Scottish people are British. Great Britain is made up of 3 countries (England, Wales, Scotland). The UK also include Northern Ireland - so people from Northern Ireland are part of the UK, but are not British.

Yeah, but then you could say there's no such thing as any pure one nationality kind of person. The English person nowadays is a mix of the Celtics, Normans, and Anglo-Saxon tribes.

Yes there is such a thing as an English person. You will find it pissed out of its tree in a foreign country making the rest us look like tw*ts or roaming the streets bare chested with its beer gut hanging out thinking it looks like a greek god, when actually it looks like a complete pillock!

Who the F*ck are vikens?

And there is always the possibilty that all my anncestors were the origanal Celts, and never mixed with the Romans, so it could be possible.

No, you're playing word games. Anyone born in England can be referred to as an English person. Almost nobody has one single ethnic ancestry, but your nationality is defined by where you were born.
