I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but it is based on decades of observation, followed by debate amongst Astronomers, leading to more observation, and so on and on, until a clear understanding emerged.
It wasn't concluded overnight, or with one simple argument and observation.
(By the way, I've been attending an annual Astronomy seminar for the past 7 years at a major US University. I once asked one of the presenters this very question! The answer I gave is essentially the answer a PhD gave me.)

If you drive out an area with very little pollution,you can see a thick band of stars across the sky.That's the milky way.

On any clear night, you can see the astral belt. You would need to be in place that is away from city lights. The astral belt is the milky way.

first of all goto mapqwest and you will see our solar system is in the milky way. secondly, you cant make cheese without milk. if we werent surrounded by milk the moon couldnt possibly be made of cheese.
