Problems cannot be solved by wars - they only push civilisation backwards. Capturing PoK during 1971 war might have been an easy job for India but it would have worsened the situation further. The root-cause of all evils is the division of India into two parts which was engineered by the British to keep India and Pakistan always at war since an undivided India was foreseen by them as a potential danger. Our leaders those days, especially Nehru and Jinnah, fell into their trap and the Kashmir problem was born. It is a pity, the leaders of both the countries are least bothered, even after five decades of freedom, about the huge cumulative expenditure incurred in maintaining the armed forces in battle-ready condition at the borders which could otherwise be used for betterment of the living standards of the people of the subcontinent. People of pakistan are the worst sufferers and deprived. The best solution for the betterment of both the countries would be re-unification which will result in a very speedy development of the subcontinent. If good sense prevails in both the countries leading to re-unification at some point of time, this subcontinent is bound to emerge as world-leader within two decades! However, the billion dollar question is:- Will the leaders of both the countries really start thinking about their people instead of minding their own business?

Swadesh, India achieved only one victory against Pakistan; and that was on the war of liberation of East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh. It was after the division of Pakistan that India gained many strategic advantages over its rival. During the previous wars, India had a hard time against Pakistan.
It all started when Pakistan was holding it first ever democratic elections in history. An overwhelming majority of the votes was for an East Pakistani leader, known as Sheik Mujib Rahman. The West Pakistani opponents and some Muslim extremists opposed the leader's victory. So, the Pakistanis occupied East Pakistan. It was a very brutal occupation, and there was a brutal guerilla war. Then, India offered military help to the East Pakistanis, and together; they defeated the Pakistani occupation and East Pakistan became a seperate state, known as Bangladesh.
That victory was a great strategic advantage for India in many ways, and Pakistan had to bear many difficulties of its own. By the way, Pakistan had US backing at the time. India was pro Soviet. Pakistan still enjoys tremendous political support from the US, especially considering the war against terror.

Nehru was basically a orator, a weak leader and a selfish politician who didnt thought beyond his own personal interest.Otherwise he could capture the whole kashmir easily not letting the sacrifices of indian soldiers in vain.Nehru could capture CTATTOGRAM port of bangladesh so that entire northeast could get the help of a nearby port and their economy revived.Nehru donated COCO ISLANDS to Burma which is now a nuclear naval base of china.Indira got the last opportunity to recapture kashmir but didnt bother.Nehru stopped production of defence items in ordinance factories and started producing agricultural equipments there that cost us a humiliating defeat in the hand of china.Sometimes I wonder why we couldnt promote a good patriot in the leadership of india!

I agree with u. But the biggest reason why our country didn't capture the whole kashmir is that we believe in giving. So our polititions r less bothered if pakistan capture some place as they tried in kargil. So unless our leaders really start acting as real leaders and tell pakistan no more giving business nothing can b done. I hope u would have been in a good position in politics may b u could have helped our leaders to take some nice decision.

There is an aphorism to the effect that the lesson that we learn from history is that we never learn from history. India has not learn the self evident home truth that Pakistan cannot be trusted. We have been a victim of our own empty ideals. When it comes to dealing with your enemy, at the international level, you need to be ruthless.
