I am in highschool and I am interested in becomming a Lawyer. I relize that you have to be smart. I get straight A's. I was thinking about majoring in English, then going to Law School. Where could I look into Law School at, for example what all it involves. What all you can do with becoming a lawyer. Also are there any books about law that you would suggest to read? I appreciate any help. Thank you.

I don't know about that English major. There's no particular major that is best for pre-law, but when I was a philosophy major in the 1970s, the Philosophy Major's Association meeting revealed that I was the only one who was not considering it pre-law. And I did go to law school years later.

With a good pre-law program, your major is not so important as the breadth of your knowledge. A lawyer has to know a bit about just about everything, because you never know what will come up in a case someday. My former boss would spend almost as much time researching the science or engineering side of a case as he did the legal part, in many cases. Over the years, I've picked up a smattering of a huge number of topics just from typing up the briefs of the liability attorneys for whom I worked.

So if an English major is how you center a broadly-based program, it's probably better than a philosophy major that does not have enough breadth. Law is not all logic and reasoning, after all. It is about everything. Literally everything.

For books, try "One L," by Scott Turow.

I think it is a mistake to be focusing on what law school is like. What you really need to find out is whether you truly want to be a lawyer. You should keep in mind how expensive law school is and that being a lawyer is not necessarily like law school. While you can do a variety of things with a law degree, if you don't want to be a lawyer, there are a lot of other ways to get to where you want to go rather than spending all that time and money for law school. Then once you are convinced you want to be a lawyer, it shouldn't matter too much what law school is like because it is simply one more obstacle you must overcome in your quest to be a lawyer.

The best way to see if you want to be a lawyer is to follow lawyers around to see what their life is like in a regular basis. With so many lawyers on television and the movies, there are a lot of misconceptions about what it means to be a lawyer on a daily basis. While some law firms have strict rules about confidentiality, there are many lawyers out there who would let you follow them around.

If you or your family knows any lawyers, talk to them and set up several days when you can follow them around. Try to watch lawyers who practice in all kinds of different areas of law. If you don't know any lawyers, contact the Bar Association in your area, and I bet they would be willing to match you up with some lawyers.

A lot of law students had History and Political Science majors, but I'd think English is fine. Go to university websites and explore what their law schools offer and suggest. Good luck.
