I would highly recommend The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. VERY heavy stuff. Not heavy as in "depressing", but more so just very emotional, and deep. A lot of the songs at that time were written based on what was going on in Brian Wilson's life, so songs basically about himself. The music is incredible, the production is even more incredible, and the tunes are "catchy". Any true musician will tell you that this album is not only one of the best albums, but seriously a very deeply emotional, life-filled, contemplative type album.
Leave it to Brian to do something like that. He's come out with some great stuff in his solo career in the last 15 years or so, but it's hard to beat Pet Sounds (1966) and SMiLE (majority of album started in '66-'67, finished in 2004).
As a side note, Pet Sounds is 40 years old this year! The music is still fresh every time though.

(this page opens with the 40th Anniversary page for Pet Sounds, plays a track of "Wouldn't It Be Nice", etc....
Hope this helps!
