Hi, Ive watched that movie like 500 times (first time when i was six). My opinion is that because the hotel and the ghosts/spirits whatever, were what created the madness that clearly lay beneath the surface of Jack's normal exterior, he became a part of the hotel and joined the other lost souls in the picture.
The caretaker who murdered his wife and kids before was the guy at the bar who was later in the toilet with Jack and telling him to kill them.
Thats my opinion

This is how I see it: it is like Jack Torrance was always "meant"/destined to be part of the Outlook. Or possibly, maybe Jack was partially reincarnated into the caretaker who killed his wife & 2 daughters all those years ago.

In the scene where Jack talks to the caretaker in the washroom. The caretaker admits he did it. So Jack in the photo is probably just one of the ghosts now.

I think there are two possible answers, both of which have been covered:
1. He was possessed by the spirit of the man who did it before.
2. He did it before in a previous life, and he did it again in this one. It's a reincarnation thing.

i might say, it has to do with the act of "shining" in the movie, jack and danny would desire to pass pass and regulate issues (like the way jack opened the door he became locked from). my interpretation of it quite is that the skill to polish is occurring with the visitors. because of the fact no person else is in the homestead on the time you spot it. so which you "shine" the assumption of jack being in the image? why? who is conscious. there is lots of questions I easily have approximately it as welll.. yet my wager is maximum probable this.

I kind of thought it just meant he'd become part of the building, one of the ghosts. Maybe the photo is of him as a ghost with the other ghosts from that date?
I'd be interested to hear other people's theories.

He can see the ghost during the movie Correct. He loses his mind and tries to kill his family now in the present. You see the picture in the present of the people from the past with him in the present. Do you believe in ghost. The ending means he is with the ghost haunting the hotel now. If I'm not right....Why not read the book or talk to Stephen King.

Jack Torrence freezes to death in the snow in the hedgemaze; his family lives. It turns out he went crazy because he was there in a previous lifetime.
