Honestly, when it comes to manipulating words, poets do it best ;-).

Get a book of e.e. cummings poetry from the library. His stuff is full of imagery and wordplay. You'll find similes, metaphors, oxymorons ("Buffalo Bill is dead" has some good ones, as does "Anyone lived in a pretty how town") as well as onomo...aw heck, I've forgotten how to spell it.

another good bet is Shakespeare, who could play with words like no one else. He's the master. Pick any play and you'll find what you're looking for in the first act. "Twelfth Night" is good.
