We have E.Trust Antivirus. AOL tells us there is no anti virus detected and my partner 'clicked here to solve this problem'.........we have lost our hard drive info 3 times because of this, and once the whole hard drive had to be replaced.

AOL just doesn't know about every anti-virus solution. Certainly, I would not trust AOL for your computer's security. In fact, I would REMOVE the AOL security features all together, and plug in what you pick. (obviously, AOL has let you down before)

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

You should have a firewall, if you have Windows XP with SP2, then use the Windows Firewall. Go to the Control Panel and check it. If you don't have SP2, then go to http://www.zonelabs.com and get the free version of Zone Alarm.

Keep your anti-virus updated and check it's status. Run scans weekly. You can only have one anti-virus program, and your computer health depends on it.

Learn how to keep your computer safe. DO NOT open emails that have no Subject that means something to you. Do not open emails from people or companies that you do not know. USE the REPORT SPAM button on every bogus email that you get. Visit websites that you know and trust. WHile there are thousands of BAD websites, there are many good websites that have everything that you need.

Coo! You have a lot to learn but here we go.
First hard drives.
There is no virus in the world that can ruin one.
Even if it gets into the boot blocks.
Any hard drive anywhere can be zeroed.
When you 'lose' you hard drive you haven't it is still there.
All that you have allowed to happen is to let it become contaminated.
Please buy a good virus programme and a net barrier.
Set up your computers Firewalls.
You will find these under sharing in your System preferences.
Allow no one in anywhere and make sure you have a password to unlock it.
I run Intego products and they are reviewed by experts as being 'more than adequate'.
Good luck and don't forget, never trust someone until you check them out.

Because anti-virus software does not protect you against spyware/malware. You will need separate security programs for that and there are some good and reliable and trustworthy free programs here:

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/219333/an/0/page/0#219333

If you're unsure what programs to instal, you can register on that website and ask the experts on what's the best programs to go for! Might not be a bad idea to go to the HijackThis forum, read the instructions on how to post a log, and get an expert to check out that your computer hasn't been infected. All free and trustworthy helpers to guide you. Good luck!

AOL doesn't recognise E trust, so thinks you don't have anti virus. See if theres a list of software that it does recognise, or try switching to Avast! anti virus or AVG. They're both free.
