my 2 dwarf hamsters, i cant tell who was making the noise. it can be closley described as a muffled air horn, the kind that come in the form of a can, he keept making the noise repeatedly, like once every .7 of a second, after he heard the cage door pop open, he stoped, he was inside his little house and he was making the noise, it was a bit hard to hear it, i cant explain it, there was no activity prior to me hearing the noise, and he isnt sick that i know of, and i had just lifted him an hour ago, he isnt going thru any stress i know of. i lifted them both an hour ago, so i know neither one of them is sick that i can tell. should i be worried or do paired male dwarf russian hamster make this noise once or twice every few months, ive never herd it before, and they werent fighting, i couldnt hear any movement.

i'm not sure of the sound you're describing. have they been near a window or draft? he could have a cold and is breathing poorly. he would need a an antibiotic from the vet if so & u would prob notice other symptoms. watch that he's eating/drinking fine. r u using cedar or pine? if so change it immediately to aspen or carefresh as it can cause breathing & skin irritation.

since they r dwarf it is fine to cage them together--they prefer company.

First of all, to the person who said more than 1 ham will kill each other, that only applies to Syrian hamsters, not dwarf hamsters. Dwarfs are perfectly capable of being in pairs and in fact should be kept in pairs.

Next, to the person who thinks it takes 8 weeks to go into heat, seriously... in 8 weeks, a hamster will have given birth 2 times, and already be pregnant again. Why? Because hamster go into heat ever 4 DAYS. They will mate each time until they are pregnant, as well.

As for the noise, I've got 10 dwarves, and the only noises I ever make them hear is more of a squeaking sound when they start nit picking with who ever their cage mates are. I've got 3 that are in cages alone (1 refused to accept a cage mate, and 2 had cage mates die), and I never hear those ones make any sound, so I think they only do it when arguing.

I would just keep an eye on your pair, and make sure they are not fighting at all, and that they don't appear to be acting oddly- ie: not eating, not drinking, laying listless, etc.

I thought you could only have 1 of them in a cage at a time or else they kill eachother.
