Some people outgrow acne. Other people struggle with acne through their whole lives. Proactiv is a decent product, but it is essentially benzoyl peroxide, one of two typical over the counter medicines sold for acne control. The other is salicylic acid, which is a little less effective than benzoyl peroxide but good for those who are sensitive to BP. Prescription medicines available through a dermatologist may be more effective. Accutane can "cure" acne by killing off your oil-producing cells, but the medicine poses certain risks (to your liver and has been linked to depression and to birth defects if you get pregnant while on it) so is used only if the acne is really bad. Your acne will not get worse if you stop using an over-the-counter product, but you are likely to get whatever kind of breakouts you get now. Proactiv has a fairly mild concentration of BP (.25%) compared with other OTC products (.5% to 1%) so may be somewhat less irritating and drying. Acne Free, which is a cheaper alternative sold in stores, has .5% BP, so may actually work more quickly but you have to see if your skin agrees with the product. The idea of these "systems" is that if you consistently clean your skin thoroughly and use an acne control medicine, your breakouts will stay under control. There is no miracle cure here.

Proactive is great!! It isn't addictive. I used it for one year and then I quit using it when I went on the pill because the pill cleared up my acne and then 5 months later I went off the pill and my face stayed clear and 9 months later I got pregnant and 10 months later I had my baby and now 8 months later I still have a clear complexion. All this to say, You won't break out worse when you stop using it. Don't worry about it!

Right now my skin is perfectly clear, for the first time in 3 years. It's been about 9 weeks and all my acne is gone. It is such a great feeling to wake up with clear skin.

Holistic Acne Treatment Guide?

It all depends the kind of acne problem that you've got.
Some people like me have developed adult acne and I'm already 37, I used to have teenage acne like everybody else.
Lets hope your problem is temporary and you'll get rid of it once you graduated from highschool (.... or college) and hit adulthood.

I think if you stay away from harsh chemicals contained in makeup, body-soap, shampoos, lotions, moisturizers you'll manage to keep your skin free of any acne breakout.

Try to get neutral based body-face wash or salicylic acid based wash like that in Neutrogena or Physodern, those help a lot!
Drink plenty of water and try to get healthy habits like eating right and stay away from sugars, starches and junk food because of all the toxins contained in them.
It is true that a diet plenty of veggies and fruits does help dramatically with your skin complexion. Try it!

Good luck!

I would suggest that you not use it. Once you sign up for it, they keep sending you crap, number one, and to me that's just annoying. And their product isn't even all that impressive. For people with an acne problem, like my sister, it didn't work all that great. Acne should be treated by a dermatologist, not some product that takes up WAY too much money. Save that money babe, and go to the doctor. It will be worth your while...trust me.

It depends on your acne but I have found...unlike what other people are saying...that if you use it for more than a few months it will clear your face GREAT but once you stop or miss a few washes, you will break out. This happened to me when my next shipment was later than what I thought. So yes, I would say your face is dependent on it.

No, used it for a while, it did not work for me. Murad worked however. I used it for a year, stopped using it and now just use plain soap. I didn't become dependent on either product.

My daughter uses it and it works great, but no it will not make you dependent. Use it until your skin has cleared, then occasionally if you need it.
