There are all kinds of theories, however, the most agreed to theory is that electricity goes from the negative side of power to try to get to the positive side and fill in all the holes in the nucleus of the atom. The power lines used stop some of the electrons from getting there, and that is known as resistance and loss. There are many books written about these theories, none completely proved as we cannot actually see anything, just the results of electricity.
