George W. Bush is now able to designate as an "enemy combatant" anyone who has "purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States. The broad powers given to Bush by this legislation allow him to capture, indefinitely detain, and refuse a hearing to any American citizen who speaks out against Iraq or any other part of the so-called "War on Terror."
In his goal to foster " democracy abroad" we are creating a police state here in the US. These are dark time.

Kathy: Why do we let terrorism scare us into compromising habues corpus protection - this dangerous course puts any American citizen at risk - even you. I would challenge you to reconsider whose head in in the sand. Please don't be such an ostritch.

Hand: This new legislation targets ANYONE and can be applied to American citizens - with such a broad defination of who can be arrested and why that we no longer have protection against government abuse. Lots of folks like you believe dissent = treason. We are losing our Firat Amendment rights.

What is shocking to me is that not many people see this very clear and present danger for this country and the ideals set forth by our founding fathers. The United States is dying and the people seem oblivious to it.

Well the problem is you dont understand what GWB is trying to do. Do you know what we did with illegal combatants during WW2? WE EXECUTED THEM!

The people are are targetting with the foreign surveilance program and others is NON-US CITZENS who are engaging in terrorist activities. The detainees down in Cuba are NOT American.

Nobody is suggesting American citizens lose their rights to trials and such. Any citizen that would be caught (highly unlikely) in terrorist activities can be tried for treason and espionage as has happened in the past.

The idea that Americans will be hauled off by the govt having no rights is a stupid knee-jerk reaction by liberals, conspiracy theorists, and anarchists. Educated people know btter.

Good question!

Where's the outrage?

This is a very slippery slope we are going down. To those who say this is aimed at foreign combatants and not US citizens - I ask you - how do you know? This can be used for ANY person who is deemd by a government official to fall into that category. Has the government made mistakes before? Has the government deliberately arrested and detained people before? Yes and it was ILLEGAL.

Now it's LEGAL!

You had better be careful of the questions you ask on Yahoo. Your phone calls are being monitored. The books you check out of the library are being recorded. You are being spied on and if they find out who and where you are George Walker Bush will have you detained and send you to Guantanamo where you will be tortured and kept barely alive in a kennel-like prison.

You are witnessing the Nazificication of America!

That is some pretty scary stuff, considering the fact that the British once considered the activities of the colonists "guerilla" tactics and that they were not members of an organized nation, nor did they wear uniforms.

It is frightening that they have put in place the infrastructure that could be so badly used, depending on who is in power.

"...anyone who has "purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States..." That hardly constitutes ANY American, my friend, nor do people who speak out against the war fall into the category of "purposefully and materially" supporting hostilities against the US...quite the contrary.

Pull your head of the sand...or you butt...wherever you have it lodged ...look at what is going on in this world.

Newsflash!!! We are at war. What part about capturing and killing the enemy don't you understand. That is how wars are won. Just because libs want to lose the war doesn't mean patriotic Americans want to lose. We want to win...and we will win.

It isn't OK in my mind. I hope that the Supreme Court actually has the backbone to block this legislation from taking efect.
