I can interpret this two ways: cynically or fatalistically. Cynically because I work at a place that, lately, everyone hates and is fleeing from. We are glad to see our friends get out, but I feel sad to see the occasional talented new person come on board.

Fatalistically because a fatalist might observe that the person who is gone is already lost, while the one who comes is the one you have to lose, so why not get an early jump on mourning for them. That's a little too dark a perspective for me to embrace, although I feel that way sometimes when I meet a great new person and I know that it's only the matter of a few short months or years before we are separated by a move or some such thing.

I'm not entirely sure of the meaning, but I think it means
"Don't waste any tears for the ones who have passed on because they may not have made this world a better place, but cry for the next generation to come because it will be on their shoulder (if you will) to solve the many problems.

To me it means that the person who is to be hired to fill the vacancy (created by the person who leaves) has a high standard to live up to. They are mourning the fact that it will be hard to find anyone as competant as the person that is leaving. And that the new person will be driven to tears in trying to fill those vacant shoes.

Death and birth.

We always cry for the loss of a person to death. But they are actually lucky. They are escaping.

We have joy at the birth of a new baby. But they are the ones who are going to have to put up with the woes of the world.

We have it backwards.

I think it means... Don't waste your time crying for somebody who left already...If they left they arent your real friend. Cry for the one who is coming means, it's a chance for a new friend, or love...They might be your real friend, so cry out of happines or cry because they might not be real friends again... It's tough one!

Hi. Look its me, your wife! Nice to see you. And nice to see how smart you have become. Great question.
For me, it means that we should not mourn the passing of this generation as it leaves behind its responsibility for history, but rather feel sorry for those who are about to inherit the mess we made.

The one who is leaving has ended their suffering - they are choosing to move on - the one who is coming probably has no idea what they are getting into and will soon suffer.
