First is Bondage. Some folks get their jollies when restrained and others get their jollies restraining others.
Second is Discipline. This is where the Type A personalities have fun with the poor pleasers. Commonly they are Dominants or Doms and submissives or subs. Notice the punctuation, that is important too. If the bondage people physically humilate you, the Dominant people will verbally and mentally do so, at the least. Those two don't necessarily go together but often do.
Third is Sadism. Some folks simply get a thrill out of hurting other people. Think of it as same song, third verse, but again it can be played and recognized as a separate interest by itself. Some folks can play with bondage and not get appreciabbly hurt. Some folks can exercise dominance over others and not get hurt. Some folks can't stand to do those without the other party getting hurt, so this applies to such. Fairly, there is an often observed civility in that if there is pain present, it doesn't have to mean injury--but beware the truly sadistic, they don't buy this.
Finally, there is Masochism. Some people seem to have a low opinion of themselves and it needs validation not just in the submissive's humiliation or being under domination. Just as the sadist feels someone has to hurt, the masochist simply knows that he or she is that someone. There can be an interesting paradox where going across the line to that which produces pain can then also produce pleasure. Now, there are also those in the M group that can also exist in the other groups. Consider that a dominant may want to corset his or herself and involve other kinds of bondage accoutriments to produce personal levels of pain, while still exercising control over others. It gets complicated.

BDSM is a catch all phase used to describe an interest in a number of related patterns of human sexual behaviour including sadomasochism, power exchange or bondage. Strictly speaking fetishism is a not part of BDSM, but fetish imagery but is very common in visual depiction of BDSM activities.
The major sub-groupings are described in the abbreviation "BDSM" itself:
bondage & discipline (B&D)
Domination & submission (D&S, DS, D/S)
sadism & masochism (or sadomasochism) (S&M, SM)
