do not use a wet or silicone based lubricant on a keyed lock. dry lubricants such as graphite and lock-ease are good choices. wet lubricants can sometimes cause the pins to stick even more.

How old is the lock? You may need to only take it apart and clean it as dirt and grime build up inside of it. Graphite acts as a lubricant and as such also holds dirt and dust.

If it needs cleaning you should only need a screw driver to take it apart with. All you do is use dish soap (a degreaser) and let it soak about an hour in hot water and then rinse it off. You should see some junk coming out. Before you reassemble the lock use a little bit of graphite to re-lubricate it. Be patient putting it back together it can be tricky. Also wash your keys and hit them with a squirt of furniture polish after (this acts as a barrier against build up on the key which will end up back in the lock.)

If this doesn't work then the lock will need replacing as that means it is worn out.

Just had this problem...ours was the lock itself, it was worn out (50 year old house). Sometimes it can be the key though. If you have another key that works, it could be the key. If that is the case, take a key that works and get a new one made. If that does not solve the problem, call a locksmith to see if you need repair or replacement of the lock.

Try some WD-40 and if that doesn't work, then check to see if the key is bent. All in all new locks don't cost that much. I would get a new lock.

I recently had this problem and I tried spritzing a little wd-40 spray oil into the lock and onto the key. It works fine now.
