x = the number

x + 3x = three times the number when added

20(x + 3) = twenty times when added

400 = The total

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The equation

20(x + 3x) = 400

20( 4x ) = 400

80x = 400

80x/80 = 400/80

x = 5

The answer is x = 5

The solution set is { 5 }

Insert the x value into the equation

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check

20(x + 3x)= 400

20[5 + 3(5)] = 400

20[5 + 15]= 400

20[20] = 400

400 = 400

Let x be the number
Thrice the number plus itself is 3x + x

Since it must be written 20 times and then be added, we will have

20(3x + x)

The equation then is

20(3x + x) = 400
60x + 20x = 400
80x = 400
x = 5

Therefore, the answer is 5.

I guess the number must be 5.

According to you:

(3x+x) * 20 = 400

=> 4x = 20

=> x = 5

I wonder in which class you study.

You question is a little unclear
400/20=20
3x+x=20
4x=20
x=5
or you might mean
((3x)+(3x))20=400
(6x)20=400
6x=20 20/6 = 3&1/3
