The current recommendation is actually 6 months. Starting solids earlier than that can lead to food allergies, diabetes later in life, and GI tract problems later in life. Because so many of the problems associated with starting solids too early don't show themselves until much later, it is best to wait until your baby's body is ready, which happens somewhere between 6 and 7 months of age.

Babies should wean themselves. You shouldn't go by a number. Start feeding cereal at 6 months, but definately don't wean before a year... it's best for them. Let them decide when they want solid foods. When they show interest in the spoon or what you are eating, then you're ready to give them a taste.

A lot of women still only breastfeed for 3 months. I only did for 10 weeks because my son could not latch on and it was costing more to rent the breast pump than it did for formula and he is 2 now and extremely smart, but I still didn't start him on cereal until he was 6 months (Doctor recommendation due to him being a preemie) Experts are finding out that starting babies on cereal and other foods too early is leading to more food allergies, childhood/adult obesity, and diabetes.

Its not weaning them you still giving them the breast milk or formula its just adding in solids and its like 5 to 6 months now not 4. There tummy's aren't ready for it. Don't complain to much cost more for you cause your having to buy baby food and formula. Its just better for them. You start weaning them of bottle or boob after a year.

Doctors nowadays suggest that you wait until the child is four months old or older before weaning as this will help the child because they believe that the child's digestive system is not able to cope with solid food before this age.

It's 6 months now, not 4. Has been for the past couple of years. (although I weaned both my children at 4 months because they were very hungry). Go with your instinct.

Well my son (who is ten now) was introduced to solids at 4 months, I started off giving him a little baby rice and then giving him his bottle, then later on he started trying baby food. The so called professionals are forever changing their minds on whats best for baby aren't they?

if you give solids before 6 months old you are potentially making your child more prone to allergy and illness basically babies aren't designed to eat anything other than mothers milk until they are more than 6 months old
