My wife is pregnant, and one of the food restrictions is things like hot dogs and "deli meats" including ham, turkey, salami, bologna, etc...

My question is, does "deli meats" mean the packaged stuff you see in grocery stores? I know those have extra chemicals in them.

Or does it also extend to all meat, including the sliced Boars Heads meats you would get at a deli when you order a sandwich?

Thank you

It goes for ALL meats that are cooked, then sliced, or jammed into a hotdog, and then refrigerated to be eaten cold. The ONLY safe way to eat lunch meats or hot dogs( we are also taling about the turkey you cook onThanksgving and then refrigerate to eat cold turkey sandwiches by the way), is to re-heat until it steams and kills all possible bacteria that could have found the meat a good home to grow, including the main concern, listeria, which will kill a fetus. Even though listeria is extremely rare, that is the main reason why doctors tell pregnant women to refrain from eating lunch meats and hot dogs...other bacterias can grow on cold meats as well that aren't as serious but can still cause illness. That goes for Boars Head brand as well, because even though Boars Head uses low preservatives, if any, it is NOT the chemical processing that is the reason for refrainig from lunch meats, hot dogs, unless it is reheated to steamy and bubbly.

Yes, the restriction includes cold sliced meat on sandwiches you get from he deli.
She is not supposed to eat cold hot dogs or deli meat because of a bacteria called listeria. Google it for more specific info.

I'm familiar with the restriction on deli meats supposedly due to increased preservatives and exposure to germs; however, I was unfamiliar with the hot dog issue. I was told that deli meats" were any meats that are sold from the deli case (and Subway/Quiznos, etc) that are not air tight sealed prior to comsumption in your home. I ate hot dogs and bratwurst quite often in both of my pregnancies without any complications.

According to recent studies caffeine in moderation is completely safe during pregnancy. The reason they tell pregnant women to stay away from deli meats is because unless it is thoroughly re-heated it can cause Listeria, as can soft cheeses such as Brie, Chamberet, Feta, and all blue-veined cheese, and refrigerated smoked fish (Canned smoked fish is safe), any dairy or juice that is not pasteurized.

I've never heard of this restriction but it does make seance. preserved meets also have a high content of salt. If she is having trouble with blood pressure that could be also. And that would also stretch to hot dogs and packaged luncheon meets. My question would be why was she given this restriction?
