Very variable.
Wages would be more in the south and more for specific expertise
and experience.
The programmers I've worked with can start as low as £15-18K straght out of university on a graduate scheme and can ean as much as £50K contacting or doing consultancy work. The last consultancy work I did I charged £75 an hour with only minimal programming skills involved.

MOST average £25 to £35K in my experience.

Supply and demand. The big banks pay highly for very skilled developers with C++ real-time skills, games companies pay less because lots of people want to work in games design. Also depends where in the country you are, the sort of company you want to work for (e.g. start-ups will tend to pay less but offer substantial share options), and how well you or your agent can sell your skills to your potential employer.
