Because since the end of WW2 it was America spending trillions that protected your sorry butts and allowed you to feed money to social programs instead of defense. Frankly, after seeing how Europe turned out, we woul dhave done better to get Britian and Russia to cut a deal with Hitler. Have him stop all aggression and he gets to keep what he had already. Couldn't have been any worse than the trashbag of weakness and welfare that exists today.

I believe that it was in the 80s when we set forth the two-wars doctrine in which this country's military must be able to maintain and win a fight on two fronts. We are moving away from this, but it was the model we used.

Several members of NATO see terrorism as something other than a law enforcement issue (law enforcement issue being what the libs think this should be). They are not being forced to help, as we were not forced to ensure their freedom and independence during the cold war. Whether you like it or not, the U.S. will be hard pressed to throw a war that the UK, Australia, Italy, Poland, etc will not show up for. Call it forward thinking, self-preservation, or just stupid old gratitude, call it what you want, they are making that decision themselves.
