I suppose one has to be born an American to understand and absorb the culture. Just as your friend was born into a culture and he has a strong desire to return to his roots.
I say this without animosity, your friend needs to return to his roots, his place of origin...it sounds as if he would be more comfortable there.

Its by far the very best the world has ever seen. Because you are free to do what ever you want. You have the freedom to become rich or you can become a criminal and everything in between. Plus all the different kinds of people and the and the bill of rights we have here like the 1st amendment. If you were in a muslim nation right now and you publicly spoke out against muslims, how long do you think you would be alive. As far as my ethnic background goes, my ancestors come from Europe. I am the 3rd generation of my family to be born here and my sons are the 4th and I must say that I am very glad to be American and that I live here and the same for my sons. I'm sure you people are very happy that you have the freedom to say bad things about such a great nation and a great peoples. And by the way what about Monday night football and an 18 pack of bud light bottles. Now what country has that. God Bless America!!!!!

I know a little about what your friend talks about. When you see movies where the cops solve all the crimes, towns are SHOCKED when evil is found close by, the quarterback marries the head cheerleader and lives happily ever after, shopping at WalMart, vacationing in Disney World and have free and fair elections and American Idol.
Well, it looks nice, but you get here and realize that that IS American culture not just advantages of living here. If you ask, what's American food, what's American culture - you can't get a straight answer. Americans are generally lazy listeners and if you have an accent they can't understand you. Your kids are teased for being different, even if they speak 2 languages and have traveled across the world to live next door to you (legally, God forbid they should be illegal).
Also, most American's aren't aware of what's going on in the rest of the world and actually DISSUADE people from discussing their differences on important topics like religion and politics.

So far, many people that been there have confirmed that is a mix between the worse that you see in Mtv and in a unmoderated discussion board, at least as of late. In few words, if you are not a stereotipe like, Jock, Model, Cheerleader, even the Cliche!Outcasts will outcast you, and also due to the rise of conservativism and Catholicism, the term "country of freedom" barely fits, and freedom of speech in the media has become nonexistant

Home is where the heart is. Culture is an extension of your personal values and heritage. If you are looking at the sewer pipe of Hollywood for culture, I say forget it.

It's materialistic, shallow and while being bright and shiny on the outside, has a sharp, rusty core. American culture has been enhanced by some truly remarkable people, but you have to dig a little deeper into the society, its not on the surface.

I liked it better 25 years ago. I think foreigners ruin it for us Americans. They come here and make it a toilet and run back to Europe. I hate that.

I think it's become an irrate and inflamed nation. We have people in power who stole elections, time after time, and we the people are too comsumed with our 'work' to make companies rich, and pay our need to spend money. I still think America is great, we just have to clean house and senate and most of all the White house has been stained.
