I am a second grade teacher....I have two adults working full time in my room along with various others who come in and out to support some struggling kids. Of my 21 kids, I'd say 15 of them a working most of the day. The others like to day dream. :)

It depends on the assignment and the initiative of the student. Sometimes, one assignment will engage one student more than the other students. Everyone has a different learning style. It's really about maximizing student's strengths and abilities.
