sit down with the employee and tell him/her what a great job he has been doing and how valuable to the company he is. People like to be appreciated. More so than even receiving high wages. Then ask that employee why he wishes to leave. Find out the reason. More money? Different position? Unhappy with a fellow employee? Unhappy with working conditions?

You really need to know the reason so you can decide on what action to take. Perhaps there is nothing you can do, but perhaps there is something you can do. Find out with an open ended question. Do not lead that person into an answer, by suggesting an answer. It would be too easy for them to agree.

Have you asked your self the question. If I was an employee would I want to work hear and for you? Other people are given you that answer, by leaving. Now you need to find out why and what to change for the better.

The bad new is a Business is a reflection of you, the good news is you can change it.

Money is not the only answer, it is you or the work environment you have made.

Remember it is not paranoid if the world is relay out to get you. Best of luck

Why?
How critical is the employee to the success of the business?
If s/he dies tomorrow will the business also die?

In my experience, it is better in the long run not to persuade the employee to stay. S/he has in effect blackmailed you, and where will it stop? What kind of message are you sending to the rest of the workforce?

Unless you have a "ball and chain" affixed, you can't control what s/he does in the future. The employee can take the salary increase/promotion/perks and use them to advantage when negotiating with a new employer.

My advice: Wish him/her luck in their new job.

What are his reasons for leaving? Are they rectifiable? Suppose he has another offer. Can you beat it? Happy employees dont just leave their jobs unless there is a better deal in some way on the other side.

What do you want out out of your work relationships? What would make you stay? How can you make your company more attractive to your employee? Can you compete for quality people in your market?
Write it into your business plan and live this problem to the end. HR is everyone's biggest problem.

You obviously forgot to have this employee sign his soul over to you in blood.

Your only other option is to OFFER A DECENT RAISE..., and kick in some extra benefits.

Short of selling his or her soul to you thats all I can think of. The rest is up to the employee since he or she still owns his or her self.

(If it's an employee that you really want to retain) Tell employee how you appreciated him/her. Tell him/here of any growth/development plan you might have. Find out WHY is employee leaving (and if the reasons are something that you can rectify, do it!). Good employees are hard to come by, treasure them.

offer your employee a raise or promote to a higher position with salary increase, offer stock options or another perk that will keep her at your business. [most employees move on to different job for more salary.........

before you can stop someone from leaving you need to know why they are leaving...

did they locate another job that pays more
do they get along well with the other employees
do they get along well with their manager
have they located work closer to home
did they find a job with better benefits

etc..

If you are a good business person you should answer that question yourself, but apparently you are not, that's why they are leaving.
