The easiest thing for you to do is to download the new version of Internet Explorer 7,http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx, which is about 100 times better than IE6. With it, you'll be able to have google as your search engine, and keep Yahoo as your hompage. You'll even realise that you can have more than 1 homepage and more than 1 search engine running on only 1 IE window open.

I use Yahoo for home page and mail, Safari, Goggle or Yahoo to search, TalkTalk for ISP and mail, and they all live happily together.
I view and work from all four plus AOL.
Mail from Yahoo and Talk Talk come to my desktop automatically if on line. I compose off line for either, and send it whenever I fancy.
All with the courtesy of Yahoo £12 mail service and my Mac Mail
Sadly I have no one to write to except two people who don't like using the Internet very much. It becomes a bit lonely at my age.
