the post code is a system to direct mail. it is split into a few sections. Lets use the example EH11 2NT

EH = Edinburgh
11 = specific area in Edinburgh (in the case the Gorgie area)
2NT = breaks it down further to a small geographical area, usually a couple of streets.

hope this helps

There are thousands of them!
Each area has a code eg Romford (Essex) code is RM, then follows a number, which indicates the town in that wider area. There are around 20 areas in the RM code. Then there are a further 3 or 4 digits/letters. These define the area within the town, one postcode will cover around 10 houses. Each complete code will get a letter to the house with just the house number and full post code.

There are THOUSANDS of postcodes in the UK, of course. Each street or group of streets has their own postcode and some large buildings have a separate postcode.
