was married
wanted son&heir
current wife not producing
needed divorce
rome not happy

at same time, H got the idea from an advisor that "head of the church" should be the king, because after all it was God that chose him for that job, right? So he decided to become head of the church within his own dominion, and stuff rome, and get divorced, and have a son to succeed him. All but the last one worked out as planned.

all of which means that the Church of England is NOT a protestant church, it's a catholic splinter group. God still has his personal named representative on earth, currently it's our very own Brenda, and will be Charlie III sometime. The monarch is just a mini-pope.

Because Catherine, his wife, could not conceive a male heir. Henry wanted to divorce her so he could get a wife that could produce a male heir. The pope said no because the pope happened to be the uncle (I think) of Catherine. Henry then started his own church, which divorced him promptly and he then remarried. If the Catholic Church won't do it, then the Anglican Church will. From that point on the King/Queen of England was the head of the Anglican Church, otherwise known as the Church of England.

have a nice day.

Henry had a few problems with the catholic church but the final problem causing the break from the catholic church was that he was not allowed to divorce his wife. Following the break from the catholic church he made the church of England which made him (and other following monarchs of England) the head of the church and the right to let himself divorce and marry when he wanted. Since then for about 200 - 300 years the religion of England has changed with the decision of the monarchy, flip floping between the roman catholic church (pope is head) and Church of England.

You've had a lot of good answers already about the problems of divorce, a male heir etc. but also remember that there was a lot of profit for Henry in turning Protestant. Monasteries and cathedrals were attached to vast estates which generated huge revenues, all of which went to the church, not the King. By making himself head of the church in England, he not only got the revenue of these estates, he got the estates themselves! The monasteries were sacked and the coffers of the English state were filled. The benefits of being both head of state and head of the church are also enormous. To be disloyal to the king is to be a heretic as well as a traitor. It was a total win-win situation for Henry, a total disaster for the Roman Catholic church.

The English Church was already feeling the strain with Rome after Luther and Calvin had effectively created two Christian communities instead of one. The pull to reform was there and it was deep. Henry's problem was dynastic. He needed an heir. At first, the Pope was willing to help him by giving him dispensations to marry, but eventually under pressure from other Catholic (and rival) monarchs like Spain, he stopped helping Henry and, in keeping with his powerful ego, Henry decided to go his own way and make himself the local "head" of the Church in England. So, in the end, it was both a religious reformation (because it was quickly supported by a renaissance of English theology and liturgy), and, a political realignment (ultimately leading Henry's daughter, Elizabeth, to war with the Spanish Armada).

Henry VIII was initially married to Catherine of Aragon (his late brothers wife). Henry needed a male heir to pass on the crown. He had 6 children with Catherine but only one of whom had survived. This was Princess Mary, who would later become Queen Mary I of England also known as "Bloody Mary". When Henry realised that Catherine could not give him a son he tried to get an annulment from his wife so he could be free to marry another woman, Ann Boleyn, so he could try for a male heir. The Pope would not agree to the annulment so Henry decided to resolve his dilemma by having the archbishop of Canterbury declare his marriage with Catherine null and void. Henry then married Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII then had split away from the Catholic Church and formed the Church of England, and put himself as the head of the church.

Well, the reformation was already on a roll, but in truth, he simply wanted something that the Pope would not give him. He wanted to divorce his Catholic Spanish princess and marry a protestant English woman.

Catherine of Aragon was his first wife and after many years of marriage only gave him one living child...a daughter, Mary I. He fell madly in love with Anne Boleyn, and when she became pregnant (after many years of holding out to him--she wanted to be his queen, not his mistress), he decided that he should lead the Church in England as it's sovereign rather than having a foreign pope tell him what he could or could not do. Anne, by the way, bore him a single daughter, Elizabeth I, before she was accused of treason and adultery and lost her head.

When Henry VIII wanted to rid himself of his first wife the current church - Roman Catholic - would not allow it. He therefore broke away from Rome and created his own church - Church of England - and put himself, and his heirs, at the head.

Easy if you're King hey!!!

Because the Catholic church did not agree with the way Henry would dispose of his wives and marry a new one and would not grant him a proper divorce or annulment and so the Church of England was created
